Spike Shannon singles, scoring Bresnahan. Devlin singles, scoring Browne. Dahlen pops out.

Top of the 6th. Mathewson’s curve to Steinfeldt does not curve and Steinfeldt smacks it down the left-field line. The ball kicks along the contour of the wall past Spike Shannon. Browne in center picks it up and fires it in to Devlin as Steinfeldt cruises in with a stand-up triple.

Mathewson’s next pitch is a fastball, sternum-high, that Frank Chance obliterates, the ball buzzing like a rocket-propelled beehive twenty feet above Blent’s outstretched arm, splitting the outfielders and rolling into the expanse behind them. Steinfeldt scores. Browne tracks down the ball and fires it on a line to Blent, who wheels and zips it to Devlin at third. “Safe!”
